Please try again later. The Prostitutes Nagai will probably not stand Prostitutes Nagai scrutiny, but the novellas of Nagai Kafu remind me of the paintings of bar scenes and 'women of the theater' by the French impressionist Henri Toulouse-Lautrec.

It's the mood of desperate gaiety and the obvious empathy of both writer and painter for their degraded Prostitutes Nagai not defeated subjects. Most of Kafu's novellas and stories predate World War 2, even though Kafu lived until and enjoyed considerable popularity after the war.

He was thoroughly disgusted with the military jingoism that led to the war, yet equally dismayed at the 'westernizing' effects of the occupation, withdrawing more and more into indolent eccentricity. However dissipated and excessive Kafu's personal life may have been, his detachment from and respect for his characters is unique in Japanese literature of his era.
